My mom pronouces shi sounds of Japanese words with see. So when we’re out at a Japanese restaurant I would hear her say su-see (sushi) or sa-see-mi (sashimi), or saabu-saabu (shabu-shabu). I think it’s because she thinks that’s how Japanese people say it (that’s wrong, btw).
Almost all ESL folks mangle the language one way or another. But this is the most bizarre.
